Every Kiss Begins with Kay...
About two weeks ago, Casey and I began searching for an engagement ring for me in the malls. I guessed the reason that we had been waiting to get a real ring was because he was planning to do something with someone from his mission. My guess was right but it wasn't working out so Casey decided to bag that plan and just go buy one that we both liked from a local store.
I am actually grateful that the mission ring did not work out because I realized what types of rings I really do like while we were waiting. (I began to secretly look at everyone's engagement rings on campus at BYU... ha,ha,ha!) After trying on several at many different stores, I found the ring that I love from Kay Jewelers. It was actually a huge blessing to because they were having a huge sale the weekend we bought it because of Labor Day. The ring needed to be re-sized so we had to continue to wait for it.
This past weekend was when Kay had tentatively said that the ring would come in. I wasn't sure though and Casey had not told me either way. I figured it would be better to wait and have a surprise than to constantly keep asking.
Saturday morning (9/19) we were taking engagement pictures so we could begin making our wedding announcements. It was fun to be able to take so many pictures and have the focus be just on us. But, it did become tiring after going at it for so long. When we got back to my house, I was fairly tired and just wanted to relax for a little while. Casey announced that he needed to go do homework. Although I needed to do it too, I was not in the mood to focus on it right then. I was also too tired to protest Casey leaving.
About an hour and a half later, Casey came back to my house to pick me up for our date. I knew we were going to eat dinner together and I assumed that he had the ring and would be proposing for real.
I had no idea where we were going as we were driving because the restaurant I thought he would be taking me to, we passed. So I began to get curious and Casey keeps making comments that were definitely in reference to having the ring.
He drives to Murray Park and (of course) opens the door for me with a kiss. Then he goes to the back to get a cooler. This thing is HUGE!! And I am looking at it wondering what he made for our picnic. Normally we just bring a tiny, single-sized lunch box type cooler when we go on picnics. But not this time. The cooler is the kind that you could feed a whole army type.
There were so many people in the park--it was crazy!! A lot of the people there looked like they were having huge family reunions and I kept teasing Casey that we could go join one of them and pretend to be related and then eat their food. This way we could save our picnic food for later. Casey insisted that I would like what he had prepared. We walked up a small hill and then sat down. The problem is that Casey forgot to bring a blanket and I have on light cream colored shorts. He picked an area that was covered in pine needles and the grass was sparse so it was more dirt than anything.
After Casey said a blessing on the food, I repeatedly asked if we could move somewhere else to eat dinner. He basically insisted that we could not move. I continue to keep asking and hoping that we can move because my shorts were getting dirty. After this going on for a bit Casey suggested that I at least look at what he had brought first and then we could move later. So I agreed. He asked me if I remembered where we were at. Of course I did--we had eaten a picnic here at the same spot earlier this summer. (But then we had a blanket... LoL!)
As he opened the lid to the cooler, I saw hot pink wrapping and instantly realized that it is red and pink roses. The ring was attached to the ribbon. Casey gently reaches for it and then switches from a sitting to a kneeling position and asked if I would marry him. I was so surprised that he was asking me in the park (I had been thinking about all the many places he could ask me and park was never one of the options I had considered...) that I said "mmm-hmmm" and grinned. He slid the ring onto my finger and then wanted to know an answer to his question. I should have made him ask it again but instead just answered YES and smiled. We kissed and smiled a lot!!
We then went to the Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner and to celebrate. This restaurant also has happy memories for us because Casey took me there when we went to Jr. Prom together. Coincidentally, we were seated in the same area as we were this night as we were that night almost 3 years ago. It was really fun and we had a great time reminiscing.
It is so absolutely wonderful to be so in love with my best friend!!! Ring or no ring--our love is real! But... it is great to have a ring too! ;)
